What is a Cattle Guard?
If you live in the city, it can be hard to picture how much work and equipment goes into managing a farm, especially if you have cows. Cows and cattle are a huge resource for the food industry as well as the agricultural industry. Raising cows and keeping them healthy is something that is easier said than done, and a lot of technologies work together to propel the dairy industry along. With so many moving parts happening around a farm, it can be easy to miss the small details. One of these small details in a cattle guard. Also know as a cattle grid, these structures are actually incredibly important on a farm or ranch.
In this video, we will learn all about cattle guards and what they do.
A cattle guard is basically a metal grid designed to act as a makeshift fence to keep cattle in a pasture, while still allowing for vehicles and equipment to drive into the pasture. Since this guard has various slots and holes, cattle naturally refuse to cross it for fear of falling in, which keeps them all in your pasture without a reinforced fence. They unfortunately do not work on farm goats.
