Installation Methods for an Explosion-Proof Seal
In this YouTube video, Thomas Betts looks at installation methods for one type of explosion-proof cable fitting. An explosion-proof seal is necessary in electrical work for safety purposes.
Star Teck STX and STEX explosion-proof fitting components work with Teck cables, ACWU cables, and metal-corrugated cables.
These components already come with the necessary fittings preinstalled that otherwise would have to be attached and installed separately.
Liquid or putty can be used for sealing the cables with these cable conductors. Liquid-sealant is always recommended over putty and is always required for lines with more than four conductors.
Prepare the cable by stripping out one inch of the outer covering. Cut through the metallic center with a saw at a forty-five-degree angle. Remove the outer jacket and armor. Always make sure the cable remains completely clean. The red tags on the fittings will say which sealing compounds can be used for that fitting. No other sealing compounds other than what is listed can safely be used.
Push the cable into the fitting and tighten down the gland nut. Ensure the bushing is sticking out correctly and is flush with the appropriate points. Unscrew the fittings on the connector side so that the inner jacket can be removed one-quarter of an inch. Remove the rest of the jacket and separate the conductors. Take away ripcords and fillers. Apply the appropriate sealant by following the directions in the kit. There are only four-five minutes before it hardens. Reassemble the connector bolt.
