Four Facts About the History of Electricity in the United States
Did you know that electrocution is one of the top five causes of death in the workplace? Pretty much every house, office, and commercial structure in the United States is equipped with electricity these days. Philadelphia electricians and electricians across the globe constantly have the work loads full fixing and installing all of these lights. Here is a little history about how this all got started.
1. Long before the invention of electricity and the light bulb, nature found a solution to the problem of darkness in the form of bioluminescence. From the deep sea to your own back yard, animals, largely insects, use bioluminescence to light their way. Fireflies use chemical energy found in their food as a way to produce food. In fact, they are so good at it that the light they give off is far more efficient than that of a light bulb. They only lose about one 15th of their energy to heat, while 95 percent of the energy used by a light bulb is wasted through heat energy. A few species of deep sea animals like squids, anglerfish, and glowworms can also utilize the chemical energy found in their food to produce light.
2. Thomas Edison created the very first strand of electric lights during the Christmas season of 1880. He hung these strands around the outside of his Menlo Park Laboratory for railroad passengers traveling by the laboratory to see. It was not until almost 40 years later that electric christmas lights became commercially available and popular and possibly serviced by Philadelphia electricians.
3. Though the first lighthouse and bridge, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge respectively, to use electricity reside in New York City, electricians in Philadelphia PA have been working hard just as long as those in NYC.
4. In 1882, two paper mills and a house on the Fox river in the United States were the first structures to utilize water generated electricity.
